Talladega National Forest Fire — FLARE Satellite Analysis

On November 16–17, 2025, a wildfire burned in the Renfroe area of Talladega County, Alabama. This case study examines how FLARE's synthetic thermal monitoring would improve early detection in emerging fire-prone regions.

FLARE Analysis

FLARE's 5-minute GOES-East satellite updates tracked the fire's development across the Talladega National Forest. The synthetic fire color composite layer revealed active flame fronts and smoldering areas, while the FireScore layer quantified intensity hotspots within the burn area. The case study demonstrates FLARE's ability to detect fires in forested terrain where ground observation is limited.

Satellite Data Used

GOES-East geostationary satellite. Channels: Band 7 (shortwave infrared) for active fire detection, synthetic fire color composite (FCOL), and the FLARE FireScore index. Location: Talladega County, Alabama. Update interval: 5 minutes.
